COMIC BOOK BIN (through Christopher Moshier): This is a totally self indulgent question, but on the flip side I think would help a lot of "Fan Film" creators or would be creators. What do you say to someone who needs that extra push? Someone who feels, perhaps, their ideas and dreams are unreachable in the world of film. What would you tell them in order for them to "Go For It" so to speak? What doubts did you have, if any?
SEAN ROURKE: It's all you, man.
It's your story.
If you wanna tell it, borrow a friend's DV camera, get iMovie, make your film and get it out on the net. It's all about the story telling. Yeah, who wouldn't want to make a lot money doin' this? But if ya wanna make a lot of money, move out to Hollywood and get a job somewhere in post or a production office. There's a lot of cabbage to be had in this town, but only you can tell your tale. It doesn't matter if you're making a 70 million dollar movie for Warner Bros., or a 20 dollar movie in your basement. Both have equal chance of either sucking or being great. In the end, the true test of whether or not you are successful as a creator is whether or not the people who watch your movie have fun and/or walk away with something more than what they sat down with.
We had our doubts walking into this but never about whether it would be a financial success. We had a story we wanted to tell, and a medium to tell it in. We were just worried if we'd be able to tell it correctly. Hopefully we have.
