Welcome to another edition of Video Game Bits. We're starting today's edition with a strange rumour our editor heard at a local retailer today. It seems that one of the video game associates at that store is under the impression that Nintendo, or one of its partners, will be releasing a Blu-ray drive for Wii in the near future. Even stranger was the associate's information source. He claimed that the store's Nintendo rep told him so. Intrigued, we went searching for any mention, anywhere, of a Blu-ray drive becoming available for Wii at any time in the future. Of course, we found none.
We also contacted Nintendo about this, and are waiting for an answer, but it is very difficult for us to believe that this rumour has any credibility anyway. For starters, Wii is only able to output a maximum resolution of 480p, which is a far cry from the fully high definition resolution of 1080p. Also, Wii has no HDMI or VGA output, which means it also can't do 1080p, even if it was powerful enough (there is a component connection available, so 1080i is technically possible). Finally, would Nintendo really be partnering to sell a Sony product? We doubt it. Our best guess is that the associate misheard the rep talking about the possibility of Wii being used as a DVD player, since the games are on DVDs and there were originally plans to make it DVD movie compatible. Here is today's Video Game Bits.
