The all-new Atom encounters a Lovecraftian elder-God, tiny, high-tech knights and an old supervillainess-- all in one issue. It seems there is a war brewing between magic and science and both sides want to use the Atom for their own purposes. Despite the growing cast and wide-ranging events, the story is still fairly easy to follow and is quite interesting as well. The art helps this, concentrating on telling a good story rather than resorting to flashy gimmickry like giant panels or lengthy fight scenes. There are a few problems with making smooth transitions. In one panel, the Atom is in the sewers, the next, he is out of costume and recounting his experiences to his professors. That is a bit jarring. There is also less use in this issue of the "quotations" of real and fictional scientists, that have appeared almost randomly throughout this title. Some readers find this device to be intrusive, even irritating and perhaps the creative team has realized that they should use these quotations sparingly if they are to have their desired impact.
