It’s hard enough living the life of a 10 year old without having to worry about falling in love for the first time. And if that wasn’t stressful enough, what do you do when your best friend ends up being your worst rival? Sugar Sugar Rune Volume 3 is an elegantly drawn manga all about the trials and tribulations of Chocolat and Vanilla, two witch princesses growing up in a world where magic and humans collide.

Sugar Sugar Rune is written with a style that is both delicate and humorous. Whilst the manga is aimed at a younger audience, the themes that are portrayed throughout the manga are subtle enough to appeal to 10 year olds as well as adults alike. There are many different undertones in the story; friendship, young love, trust and rivalry are but a few of the main driving themes underneath the sugar-coated glimpse of life as a witch princess.

The drawings in Sugar Sugar Rune Volume 3 capture the essence of youth and charm as well as innocence with the use of wide-eyed animation. The animation seems to almost flow off the page with a distinctly feminine feel. The animation suits the manga beautifully.

The book begins with an introduction to all of the main characters in the story. This is great for readers who have not read the entire series of books and gives you a bit of background on the characters. Vanilla and Chocolat are the main characters, joined by Pierre, the mysterious boy that Vanilla falls in love with. There is also a very strong French influence throughout the manga.

Sugar Sugar Rune Volume 3 is the type of manga that would definitely appeal to its target audience.
