When junior high school student Junpei Manaka spotted a beautiful girl lying on the roof of his school and caught a glimpse of her strawberry-patterned underwear, he knew that he had to have her.  It takes Junpei quite a while to learn that the strawberry panties actually belong to nerdy Aya Tojo.  The two end up at the same high school, but while Junpei struggles to express to Aya his feelings for her, he’s also dealing with all the other teen girls in his life.

In Strawberry 100%, Vol. 6, Satsuki Kitaoji, the combative “grrl,” who is Junpei’s friend, doesn’t want to be the girl who is just like one of the guys.  She wants to be Junpei’s girlfriend, but Junpei’s madly in love with Aya.  So that leaves Satsuki with little choice, and she plans to show Junpei everything he’s missing by not choosing her… everything…  Meanwhile, Amachi, the new boy in school, makes amorous moves on Aya.

THE LOWDOWN:  While Strawberry 100% is part of VIZ Media’s “Shonen Jump Advanced” line of manga for male teen readers, the title is really a hybrid.  It has all the sexual innuendo and gratuitous shots of large bosoms and fleshy rear ends that male readers enjoy, but Strawberry 100% also has an exceptionally strong romantic angle that will appeal to shoujo (girls’ comics) romance readers.  Perhaps, it’s best to describe this as a high school comedy with an ensemble cast full of crazy, scheming, lusty youths – which makes for an enjoyable read.  Creator Mizuki Kawashita’s fine figure drawing serves this manga, full of physical comedy and physical characters, very well.

POSSIBLE AUDIENCE:  Readers who wouldn’t mind reading a comic book version of their favorite spicy high school film comedies will certainly enjoy this.
