The selection was announced at an awards reception where stars Vin Diesel and Patrick Swayze and director Penelope Spheeris were also honored. The awards reception was part of VSDA's Home Entertainment 2005, currently taking place at the Bellagio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. VSDA's Home Entertainment 2005 is the annual convention of the Video Software Dealers Association.
Written by Oliver Stone and directed by Brian de Palma, "Scarface" is an updating of the 1932 gangster classic, "Scarface, The Shame Of The Nation." It follows Mariel boat lift refugee Tony Montana as his brains and guts raise him to the head of a drug cartel, and then as his vices ultimately bring him down. Described by one reviewer as "the most violent, thrilling, revolting, surprising, and gruesome gangster movie ever made," "Scarface" has been a popular video since its release on VHS in 1988. It was first released on DVD in 1998, and is currently available from Universal Studios Home Entertainment in several DVD editions.
"Scarface" joins last year's selection, "The Godfather," in the Hall of Fame. (Ironically, both movies star Al Pacino.) The VSDA Hall of Fame recognizes movies that have continued to perform well in both video sales and rental over an extended period of time. Hall of Fame inductees are selected by the video retailers and distributors who are members of VSDA.
