Rated “T+” for “Older Teen”
Loosely based on two plays by William Shakespeare,
Henry IV (1591) and
Richard III (1592),
Requiem of the Rose King is set in medieval England. The
House of Lancaster (represented by a red rose) and the
House of York (represented by a white rose) both covet the throne of England, and their struggle is called the “War of the Roses.” Into the house of Richard of York is born a third son, a sickly child that he names “
Richard” after himself. Richard dreams of his family ascending to the throne, a throne that will one day be his.
As
Requiem of the Rose King, Vol. 5 (Chapters 17 to 20) opens, Richard is determined to find her brother, the ousted
King of England,
Edward. However, another Edward, the son of the Lancaster
Henry the Sixth, not only wants the throne, but also wants Richard – and he knows Richard's secret. Later, fate returns someone dear to Richard into his life, forcing him to confront his feelings.
THE LOWDOWN: The Requiem of the Rose King manga – I love it unconditionally. I think this may be the first time I romantically love a manga.
Requiem of the Rose King Volume 5 is the volume where I am forced to admit that I don't read this manga so much as I try to absorb it into my imagination. I am bewitched. Won't you join my cult of Richard? Seriously, talk about a good read. This is my “Game of Thrones.”
I READS YOU RECOMMENDS: Fans of Aya Kanno will want to try
Requiem of the Rose King.
