When the Dabel Brothers began work on their comic book adaptation of New York Times bestselling author George R. R. Martin’s novella, THE HEDGE KNIGHT, in 2002, they hoped the book find enough of an audience that they could break even on their production costs.

Now, with over 50,000 copies sold and consumers buying up anything written by George R. R. Martin following the success of his latest bestselling novel, A FEAST FOR CROWS, Dabel Brothers Production is preparing to enter the graphic novel edition of THE HEDGE KNIGHT into a third printing simply to meet demand from readers and booksellers.

“It’s amazing how this little book no one had ever heard of has turned into such a spectacular hit,” said Ernst Dabel, President of Dabel Brothers Production. “When we started production on THE HEDGE KNIGHT, our biggest concern was whether or not it could find an audience. Three years later, we’re hoping our latest print run will be able to satisfy demand long enough for us to get the sequel, THE SWORN SWORD, finished in time for its launch next April.”

The third edition of THE HEGDE KNIGHT will contain special preview art from THE SWORN SWORD, which is currently in development by the same creative team. The short comic “The Battle of Redgrass Field,” which first appeared in the second edition, will also be included.

Part of the appeal of THE HEDGE KNIGHT, explained Dabel, is that it’s a faithful adaptation of a well-crafted story. “When we bring the work of our authors into the visual medium, we strive to stay as true to the source text as possible. We work closely with each author to ensure that we don’t get away from their vision for the story, and we ask fans to look over our proofs and offer nitpicky suggestions so we can stay as true to the spirit of the source material as possible.”

“Mr. Martin is one of the best writers in fantasy today,” Dabel continued, “and he has a knack for writing characters who are fun to read. In THE HEDGE KNIGHT, Dunk isn’t a heroic noble leading a kingdom – he’s just another hopeful in a crowded tournament trying to make a name for himself despite his lack of training and experience. It’s his courage and his stubborn determination that make him interesting – not his prowess or his lineage.”

THE HEDGE KNIGHT THIRD EDITION will be available at bookstores everywhere by the end of the year. A new run of the second printing has also been released to meet demand in the meantime. Retailers and booksellers are encouraged to place their orders now through Diamond Book Distributors.
