Besides the obvious genre and the lip service to the current religious overtones present in our world, this film tries to expand the territory it covers by forging strong back stories for several characters, on both side of the war. The cast is impressive, although Diesel has the habit of distracting people and ending suspense of disbelief with his short and annoying sound bite quips.
Visually, the crew set to create a new universe. They succeeded. It’s grandiose and creative, while not too reminiscent of Stargate or Star Wars. There were several settings to explore and the photography in each worked quite well. A short animated prequel is also available which should clear up some of the confusing continuity. This film is open ended. Expect another sequel.
