Wolverine, setup by Mystique last issue, is shot several times in Afghanistan by militia. But his mission, the capture and assassination of Mystique is not complete and he has to get up before his body is fully healed to find the woman and kill her once and for all. But although Wolverine is a good tracker and does find the shape changing mutant, she has one last trick in her bag and sets it in motion in order to escape from Wolverine. But is Mystique really one step ahead of Wolverine?

Although I like the visual aspects of this story, I have to say that in a year probably, few will remember this story. It seems like there will be no checkmate moments for neither Mystique nor Wolverine at the end of this story. It’s just little acts of cat and mouse and no deeper meanings or hints at a parallel story being drawn here, although the flashback about past encounters between Wolverine and Mystique are interesting. If Aaron succeeds in tying that aspect of his narrative to the one set in the present, he may write something that will remember after all. But I’m not sure we will have the opportunity to see such greatness here.

Garney is a great illustrator. His work is crisp and adds layer and texture to any series he works on. He’s got a sense of the dramatic that makes his characters look good. Each character he draws has its own idiosyncratic feature, its own way of standing, its own way of sitting and its own way of smirking. Just a few brush strokes from Garney convey a lot of information. This is a master illustrator at work, and so far the only highlight of this storyline.
