A horribly scarred young woman awakens in a hospital after a jolt of electricity brings her back to consciousness. Wrapped tightly in the clutches (literally) of another horribly scarred, and dubiously demented, man named Suture, our young protagonists discovers that she has the ability to fight back...powerfully. Possessed of inhuman strength, no knowledge of who she is or where she came from, and even more frighteningly: no knowledge of just how she came to be in her current physical state, our young heroine discovers there is more to her new nightmare existence than she at first realized...there are monsters everywhere...and apparently only she can see them. Meanwhile, a shadowy figure, a shadowy government institution, and a concerned FBI agent are all on the hunt for our screwed young protagonist...but only one of them has her best interests in mind.

From the mind of the artist Tyler Kirkham (Amazing Spider-Man, X-Men Phoenix: Warsong) comes Zenescope's latest worthy offering of horror, action, and mystery. Once again, another Zenescope offering that appeared (according to its cover art and promotional images) to be nothing more than an attempt at adolescent attention grabbing filled with lots of T and A turns out to be an interesting mystery with loads of potential. Borrowing heavily from the Frankenstein myth, but with a unique contemporary twist (and lead role gender swap), Screwed is more of what Zenescope does best, and folks...they really are the best at what they do. The only drawback to this debut issue is that we don't really get enough background information on our heroine. It's something that will obviously come later, but more than just the few tidbits we're thrown here would have made this issue even more engaging.

Artist Dave Miller brings this mystery/action/horror ride to life beautifully. Screwed has some of the best artwork I've seen recently in a Zenescope book. Highly detailed, well proportioned (and I'm not just referring to the lead characters measurements), and sporting a suitably shadowed color scheme, Screwed is a feast for the eyes.

With enough action, mystery, pretty girls, and gory events to stoke the horror and action fan in you, Screwed is one hell of a ride worth taking.
