DC Comics’ attempt at depicting the Fantastic Four continues as the heroes find out that they cannot leave one another. We also find out about Phantom Girl’s origin and why she was found on a floating asteroid in the Dark Multiverse.

This comic is supposed to be pure fun but what is still missing is the shear creativity of concepts that made the Fantastic Four a force to reckon with. In other words, though I loath this term, the Terrifics need more world-building. Playing with disparate branches of the DC Comics universe will not be enough. The Terrifics have to impress. This may not be something that creators bent on keeping their best ideas to themselves want to tackle. Hence, are we really getting the best from Ivan Reis and Jeff Lemire’s mind?

I like Reis’s work here. It is some of his best and so not Jack Kirby-ish! His version of Metamorpho draws from Ramona Fradon but with a Michael Jackson nose job. It’s delightful. Phantom Girl still lacks much a personality or anything specific to do but her visuals recall some of Kirby’s Inhumans characters. Plastic Man and Mr. Terrific are of course great to look at. I do find the giant T-Sphere a bit boring to look at. It is supposed to be an analogue of the Fantastic Four’s car but it lacks details.

This comic still has to prove itself but I really do want it to impress me and succeed. Here is a question. How did Phantom Girl grow up if she could not materialize or interact with her environment? What did she eat?
