It’s Christmas in the Scooby Apocalypse universe (wherever that may be), and the gang just got a lump of coal in their stocking. It’s not an adventuresome story, but it does explore the characters a great deal, most in their relationships to one another. Shaggy and Velma, Velma and Daphne, Daphne and Fred, and so on.

It all happens against the backdrop of an investigation into one of the remote labs of the Dinkly family. Since it was her family that created the nano-virus that’s destroyed much of humanity, Velma’s determined to discover a cure. The computers at a remote location in Wisconsin may hold the key – assuming the facility hasn’t been compromised by the monsters.

I’m enjoying Scooby Apocalypse more than I expected to. At first I took it a simple variation on the old franchise. But I can see that it has much more meat on its bones than I gave it credit for. I haven’t watched Riverdale, but the analogy may be the same.

The issue also features a new chapter in more-realistic Secret Squirrel back-up feature. This installment is illustrated by Howard Chaykin, whose work I adore. The concept may be too similar to the Ruff & Reddy title he’s currently writing, but in both instances, they work.
