While working on a science fair project in the Fortress of Solitude, Jon and Clark are mysteriously transported to a strange island that appears to be somewhere in the South Pacific that inhabited by giant dinosaurs and a large amount of derelict World War II era machinery.
I thought that this issue would have been the first issue of the Rebirth Superman title that I was going to consider the series' first throwaway issue. Ultimately, it remains unique because it depicts yet another rather tender moment between Superman and Son, something that hasn't been explored in a mainstream, or in continuity, Superman title before, to the best of my knowledge. The whole "dad saves son from monsters" plot that quickly develops is rather trite though, and has been seen many times before in comics, books and movies. It's the secret reveal at the end that makes the next worth coming back for.
Doug Mahnke does a really great job with the action in this issue. His dinosaurs are huge and imposing. The battle between them and Superman is again nothing short of iconic. Every pose that Mahnke puts Superman in is iconic yet fresh. His artwork on this series is some of the best mainstream superhero comic book art being published right now.
It will be interesting to see how DC Comics reintroduces the mystery characters alluded to at the end of this issue in Superman #9. Their presence in the new Rebirth DCU will be fun story to read.
