Norman Osborn, yes, him again, is jealous of the success of Doctor Pym’s Avengers. Although Pym’s team operates mostly outside of the United States, it still has more visibility than Osborn’s paid for villains masquerading as super heroes. Can Norman Osborn discredit the Mighty Avengers with the help of Loki, or will the international team, prevail over the villains?
One thing lacking in this story pitting Osborn versus Pym is legitimacy. Pym has legitimacy with the Avengers, no matter how tacky his team is. Pym is a founding Avengers, he should not have to ask anyone’s permission about naming his team the Avengers. This was something that was alluded to in earlier stories that is missing here where it is necessary. Still, I like the interaction between Pym and Osborn. The two have much in common in terms of unstable personalities and pasts, and its fun to see each at their pinnacle, but one is clearly growing and the other is near his descent. I wish the author would have played more with that aspect of the two characters in the story. As for the Quicksilver guilt trip, I say bring it over. It’s about time Pietro Maximoff was made a lovable character again.
I was happy to see Pham back this issue. He really defined this series for me. I do miss his usual inker though who brings more fluidity to the lines in his design than Yeung’s inks. Yeung’s lines are finer and he is better with the cartoony and facial expression work of Pham, but he doesn’t add the grittiness and the kinetic energy of Miki to Pham’s work. Still, the cleaner approach is not bad at all, as the facial expressions look better than before.
