The Human Flame, the third-rate villain who helped set off the FINAL CRISIS, is finally cornered by the Justice League but he now has the power to fight them off and maybe the destroy the world in the process.
The conclusion to this merry romp isn't quite as enjoyable as it should be. Basically, in this issue, the Human Flame turns into a giant monster, threatens the city and is finally brought low.
Previous issues of this miniseries were enjoyable for their black humour, for the weird situations that the Flame would get himself into. And for his self-serving observations about his mess of a life. But this last issue is just basically another fight between superheroes and a Godzila-sized monster. And despite some hints in earlier issues that the Flame was coming too some sort of epiphany about his life, this issue ends (DO WE HAVE TO PUT A SPOILERS ALERT HERE?) with the Human Flame basically as foolish and self-deluded as ever. Except now, he gets the Justice League to sneer at him.
The depiction of the Justice League in the story is also disappointing. Although they start off well, ultimately, they just basically serve as background decor for the Flame's rampage. Even the ending, which should be an ironic, final humiliation for the Human Flame, doesn't really come off, because few people will understand the significance of John Stewart's final act.
The art is animated and exciting but it is also too busy with the artist doing everything he can to showcase the Human Flame's monsterous new form but not doing enough to make the panels more comprehensible.
At least we still get a nice action tale out of this book. But considering how good the previous issues were, this last issue should have been much, much better.
Rating: 7.5/10
