The writer Scott Lobdell does a great job of setting up the story so it is easy to follow for new comers as well as keep it interesting for fans that have been following the series since the beginning. The issue was short and sweet and he did a great job leaving off at a cliff hanger. Overall Scott does a great job making you feel empathy for his main character. The stage is set for what looks like a very good series.
Alex Konat brings to life a world that is both fascinating as well as beautiful. I found the small details to be what really drew me in. The small octagons that made up the tables and doors are just an example of the details that draw you in and make this world really stand out from other comics. Beth Sotelo uses colors that are spot on and round out the art making this fantasy easily believable. I was especially impressed with the art when Aspen uses her water powers to fight off the bad guys. The sword formed from water looks awesome and it’s hard to tell where she ends and the water begins.
I hope that Aspen Comics brings this team back for the remainder of the series. The combination of writing and art really works well for this story and I expect good things from them. If this is any indicator of what we can expect from issue #1 than I believe Aspen Comics has another hit on their hands with Fathom Vol. 4.
I recommend this too book comic readers everywhere! Buy, Read, Bag, Board!
