I’m not familiar with EverAfter. Despite instructions to the contrary, judging the cover leads me to believe it’s a spin-off of Fables, another title I’ve never read. And judging by the interior pages, it borrows rather heavily from the TV show Once Upon a Time, bringing fairy tale and Mother Goose characters to life in a whole new way.

Apparently, many are agents of a secret organization intent on defeating some of the more malevolent magical entities. This would include a group based on Alcatraz, who seem determined to resurrect the spirits of Native Americans in retaliation for centuries of injustice. Despite the magical mumbo-jumbo, there is one exchange I found especially amusing, especially in this 21st century mindset; reminiscent of Hans Gruber’s “I read about them in Time magazine” quip.

Derivations aside, I enjoyed what I read, though the visuals had me a bit flummoxed. On page one, dialogue is attributed to a character, but when his side of  the conversation resumes, it goes to a person not even featured in panel 1. Or maybe I just overlooked something. Other elements went unexplained, but that’s par for the course when coming in at issue 4 in five-issue series.

But the rendering by Moore is quite good, without being overly stylized as many artists attempt these days. It’s quality work, and no doubt we’ll see more of it in the coming years.
