The sequel will also feature returning actors Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Bruce Willis, Rosario Dawson, as well as Josh Brolin, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Dennis Haysbert. Keach was most recently seen in The Bourne Legacy.
The script, written by Miller, blends existing Dark Horse comic stories such as A Dame to Kill For and Just Another Saturday Night with new stories Miller developed specifically for this film.
Rodriguez has already begun production at his Troublemaker Studios in Austin, Texas. The film is set for an Oct. 4 release.
Quill is an alien/human hybrid who becomes a NASA astronaut and interplanetary police officer Star-Lord. Other actors reportedly considered for the role include Lee Pace, Jim Sturgess, Joel Edgerton, Eddie Redmayne, Zachary Levi and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Other characters slated to appear in the film are Drax the Destroyer, the human resurrected in the body of an alien to combat Thanos; Groot, the extraterrestrial tree monster; Rocket Raccoon, the fearless genetically altered raccoon; and Gamora, the most dangerous woman in the universe.
Directed by James Gunn Guardians of the Galaxy is scheduled to hit theaters Aug. 1, 2014.
