Best Ongoing Series: Batman

Over the years, the Dark Knight has been in hundreds of series, many of them great. So what makes Scott Snyder's Batman stand out in 2012? Horror. That's right, I said "horror." Batman has never been traditional a horror book, nor is it now, but Batman always capitalized on instilling fear into his enemies. Snyder took an element of the cowl that had always been there, yet never quite emphasized, and brought it to the forefront of his storytelling with two bone-chilling story arcs this year: “Court of the Owls” and “Death of the Family.” The “Court of the Owls” turned Bruce Wayne's world upside down as he fought an enemy that was in every corner of his city, an enemy who knew his secret. “Death of the Family” saw the return of the Joker, with an all-encompassing brutality that you feel in your guts and the entire series proves high caliber storytelling is still possible, and happening, in mainstream comics.

Runner-Up: Rachel Rising
Rachel Rising is the most engaging and unique comic book published this year. Set against the backdrop of a snowy New England town, writer/artist Terry Moore weaves a tale of recently resurrected female residents and an ancient witch seeking vengeance for when she, along with many other innocent women, were tortured and burned to death during a witch hunt. Putting aside Terry Moore's brilliant artwork, this supernatural horror story is unlike many others, with its highly developed characters and an intricate plot that slowly and masterfully unfolds month to month, always leaving the reader dying (pardon the pun) for more.
