Lord Sunoro, the self-proclaimed chief magistrate of monsters, is raising hell on a Friday night, as he leads a mass of monsters tearing apart College City. Hold on! Monster fighter Vance Kreteck, a former human who is now a monster, is leading the charge to destroy the destroyers.
252-Z: Law of Monsters is a new full-color comic from prolific graphic novelist, Carter Allen. It’s a wild, old-fashioned monster comic book, which seems to grab moods, styles, and ideas from myriad sources – directly or inadvertently: Heavy Metal, Kevin Eastman, Underground Comix, Michael T. Gilbert’s Mr. Monster, Todd McFarlane, Craig McCracken, and Hellboy. In fact, Vance Kreteck looks like a blending of Hellboy and classic Captain American villain, Red Skull.
252-Z (pronounced 2-52-Z) is a quick fun read, and has a lot of potential, especially if Allen offers fairly frequent follow-ups. The art has a nice, raw DIY feel. It seems to be pencils colored with markers, which gives the comic a good loud, crude feel, like a monster comic should have. There’s plenty of big action – like a Jack Kirby comic, and the landscape printing format makes Law of Monster feel widescreen and brings the action up close and kick ass personal.
