Rated “M” for “Mature”

An excellent secretary and a consummate professional at Tohma Corp., a tableware manufacturer, Kaya Satozuka is 22-years-old.  Suddenly, she is reassigned to the office of the company’s difficult Managing Director, Kyohei Tohma.  Kaya does not worry about her hard-to-please new boss; then, she discovers that Kyohei is a vampire.

Now, 23-years old, Kaya works full time at Lakes Venture Capital (LVC), a new investment company started by Kyohei.  As Midnight Secretary, Vol. 5 (Chapters 21 to 25) opens, Kaya finds herself annoyed by the reappearance of Kyohei’s friend, Marika, who is the daughter of LVC director, Yuuichiro Kenbuchi.  Marika is also a vampire.

Kaya believes that Marika is coming between her and Kyohei, and it seems as if her short-lived “honeymoon” with her vampire boss is over.  However, Kyohei has some declarations to make, and they affect both Kaya and Marika.  Meanwhile, the politics of the vampire clans reveal Kyohei’s troubled family and personal history.

THE LOWDOWN:  As I wrote in my prior review of the Midnight Secretary manga, the more I read it, the more I like it.  Silly and playful, Midnight Secretary is a highly-enjoyable read.

Each of the five chapters in Midnight Secretary Volume 5 is filled with lovelorn romance, soap opera drama, or relationship intrigue… or some combination.  I don’t know how creator Tomu Ohmi has been able to stretch this simple concept into a series, but I’m glad she has.  Her prideful vampire and stubborn heroine make beautiful manga music together and are a winning pair.

POSSIBLE AUDIENCE:  Readers looking for a unique shojo vampire romance will want to try Midnight Secretary.
