Kaya Satozuka prides herself on being an excellent secretary and a consummate professional at Tohma Corp., a tableware manufacturer. When she is 22-years-old, she is reassigned to the office of the company’s difficult Managing Director, Kyohei Tohma. Kaya does not worry about her hard-to-please new boss; then, she discovers that Kyohei is a vampire.
As Midnight Secretary, Vol. 3 (Chapters 11 to 15) opens, a year has passed since Kaya discovered that Kyohei is a vampire. Kyohei is drawn to Kaya’s blood, finding it especially fragrant when he makes love to her. Finding her position as Kyohei’s “midnight secretary” to be unprofessional, Kaya transfers to Erde, a subsidiary of Tohma Corp.
However, Kaya discovers that Kyohei has refused to hire a replacement for her, so she starts spending nights back at Tohma, helping her old boss once again as his… midnight secretary. But the moonlighting wears her down, and she also catches the eye of her new boss, President Takasu.
THE LOWDOWN: After having read a second volume of the Midnight Secretary manga, I am an even bigger fan of this playful and silly erotic vampire romance. I must admit to being shocked at how many sex scenes are in this story. Everything is done tastefully (sort of), and Kaya’s shapely cartoon breasts are too cute to offend. The art even has a Joe Shuster-Eric Stanton quality.
I must also admit to being a little troubled at how creator Tomu Ohmi treats her heroine. Kaya is the smartest person in the room, yet she is always overcome by the attentions of lustful men – that is when she isn’t pining away over the vampire boss/lover who seems to always be taking advantage of her. “No” means “no,” honey.
POSSIBLE AUDIENCE: Readers looking for a unique shojo vampire romance will want to try Midnight Secretary.
