The trial of the Shadow Thief for the murder of Firestorm is set to begin with Manhunter's alter ego, Kate Spencer acting as district attorney. But the supervillains, worried that Shadow Thief will squeal, send another meta-human baddie to silence him. This issue stands well on its own while also playing a part in a larger story. It can be enjoyed without having to read IDENTITY CRISIS or FIRESTORM but those who do read those titles will find that it fits in quite well with those books. The internal conflicts within the lead character, her regret at being a bad mother, her anger at criminals and her clever way of bringing the Justice League into this story, are all well done, showing both Kate's intelligence and her impulsiveness in getting into something she may not be ready for. The battle between Kate and the surprise supervillain of the issue is also well choreographed, giving us a lot of action and some witty exchanges in just a few pages. The villain of the issue isn't a big name. In fact most would consider him a jobber but the baddie hasn't been written this well in years and that makes Manhunter's inevitable victory over him all the sweeter. A good book all around.
