JSA: All-Stars # 8

This miniseries has focused on revealing details of the characters of the second-generation Justice Society members like the new Mr. Terrific, the new Dr. Midnite, etc. But many of these standalone stories have been disappointing, failing to deliver the emotional impact that was expected of them.

This final chapter gets away from all the introspection and goes straight to what Johns does best: a direct confrontation between good and evil. The villain behind the plot is revealed, the heroes, young and old outfight and outsmart him and some clever plot twists are sprung on the readers and the characters. This is probably the most satisfying chapter of the miniseries because it is a simple comic book story that doesn't try to wring some tears out of our eyes. Johns even manages to give a credible explanation on why a bad guy would send the JSA on this spiritual journey before trying to kill them. Even the inspiring words at the end of the story become more effective after seeing the team in action.

Velluto and Almond can get a bit heavy with their black lines but they capture the violence and the power of these superhuman beings as they clash with each other in one unearthly battlefield.

Sadly, this miniseries, with its look into the inner turmoils of the JSA, won't become the classic tale it was intended to be. Maybe it is better for the JSA to stick to the old "KRASH-BAM-POW!"
