The Intimates # 6
By Hervé St.Louis
June 18, 2005 - 18:30
This issue, featuring Wildstorm’ s teenage super hero high school, focuses on Sykes. Sykes is the autistic-like kid with random projections spewing from his brain. A mystery to his fellow classmates and even the faculty of the seminary, Sykes’ powers may bring the world to an end and closer to God, once Empty Vee turns off the control switch controlling his projections. What happens when one releases a god?
Although the imaginary world into which Sykes’ pals are projected into is vivid, weird and dangerous, Casey makes the narrative clear and by carefully plotting the disjointedness of the teens’ adventure within their pal’s mind. Instead of being incomprehensible philosophical babble, like many modern comic books, this story is easy to read. Having the commentary at the bottom of the page disappear is good. One wonders whether Sykes is the omni present narrator who has been commenting on everything since this series’ beginning.
Camuncoli must be itching for more action scenes in this series as the few panels where he could show some fights are well crafted. Even when using tiny toon-like interpretations of the characters, he can show action. To reinforce the theme of the story, Camuncoli limits his page layout to simple designs, such as the nine and four panel grids. As the story goes berserk inside Syke’s mind, readers remain anchored on the visual logic created by the layouts. Syke’s madness may not be as random after all. That’s great storytelling.
