The Intimates # 5
By Hervé St.Louis
June 7, 2005 - 20:31
New student Dead Kid Fred’s parents sent to the seminary as a last recourse. Scheduled to join the seminary much before that, Dead Kid Fred resents being there. But his resentment is not alone as Dead kid Fred is the ultimate freak in a school filled with marginal students. Will Dead Kid Red, whose special ability is death, survive, pun intended, the Seminary? Can he even die?
This issue shows another side of Punchy, the caring friend. Casey mixes many teenage themes, such as the new kid and teenage suicide and rejection from girls to create a compelling portrait of Dead Kid Fred. Using a fictional Web journal, Casey makes the reader empathize with Fred. Casey covers bases such as Fred’s spelling, which is great. Hopefully, Dead Kid Fred will be featured frequently.
Camuncoli shows the tragedy of Dead Kid Fred by giving him a wide eye stupid look as if he were always surprised. He looks more like a farce than a human dealing with a tough situation. The only place where we see Fred’s plight and pain is in the second to last page. There, he looks frail and we take his pain seriously in all angles, visual and psychological. This team is incredible as each creator’s strength reinforces the other’s.
