"The Hedge Knight" takes place roughly 90 years before the events of the first "A Song of Ice and Fire" book "A Game of Thrones". It centres on the first meeting of Dunk, a Hedge Knight's squire and Egg, a boy who is rather more than he seems to be, and of the great tourney at Ashford Meadow.

This is an adoption of a story by the same name that has already been printed (appeared in a book called Legends). I don't know how much this has affected the story or how much it has changed from the original. It was an OK opening of the story but nothing more (which is a shame in a world were if it's not a superhero no one buys it). The language was suitable and dialogue worked. The main thing bout this story is, it doesn't suck you in. I have no feeling or empathy for Dunk or Egg. So what is bringing me back for issue #2?

The art, this is a funny situation. On the most part it's alright, but then there are other times when it can look out of place. The people look a little stiff and movement isn't depicted too well. Colour wise, well, it's the same problem here as well. Mostly it's OK, other times it jus doesn't seem right (the Pavilions really looked out of place). I really think calmer hues should have been used and there didn't have to be a glossy finish.

Even though this was a little weak on appeal, it's just the beginning and as George R R Martin is recognised as one of the best fantasy writers out there and the follow up to this story "A Song of Ice and Fire" is consider as a masterpiece. I'm going to give this another chance. It should definitely get better.
