Hawkman #32

This is really an Atom story, guest-starring Hawkman. The two venture to Antarctica to investigate a mysterious city hidden beneath the ice. They encounter aliens and Nazis and world-conquering plots, all before the Atom saves the day. It is a compact, entertaining story, the kind that would fit in perfectly in the 1960s although it does look rather rushed by modern standards, especially since one-third of the story consists of flashbacks. Hawkman is just along for the ride but there are some great scenes of Ray and Carter interacting with the Atom's cool, light-hearted outlook going up against Hawkman's somber tone and barbaric fury .



The art by Joe Bennett shows incredible potential. From the reptilian monsters to the World War II bombers to the scenes of Hawkman in battle, he captures the fantastic aspects of these varied elements while making them look convincing. His work is a nice combination of pulp magazine covers and modern-day action comics. He even manages to capture the humour in the closing scene. He may be the perfect guy to handle a title like HAWKMAN which can switch from superheroics to science fiction to historical drama to horror all in one issue.
