Rated “T” for “Teen”
Shoyo Hinata once saw the legendary volleyball (haikyu) player known as “
the Little Giant” compete at the national volleyball finals. It was then that Hinata began a quest to be the best volleyball player ever. In a sport in which tall athletes dominate, however, Hinata's height of 5'4” is considered too short. Now playing for
Karasuno Public High School with his rival,
Tobio Kageyama, Hinata does not believe that a player needs to be tall in order to play volleyball, especially when a player can jump higher than anyone else – as he can.
As
Haikyu!!, Vol. 13 (entitled
Playground; Chapters 108 to 117) opens, Karasuno has moved into the “
Qualifier Round” of the
Miyagi Prefecture Preliminary Round of the
National Spring High School Volleyball Tournament. First, the team faces
Johzenji, and the players' loose and free style proves to be a problem for Karasuno's players, who must find a way to counter the Johzenji's players' tactics. And one of the Johzenji players reminds some people of “the Little Giant.”
THE LOWDOWN: The Haikyu!! manga chugs on with exciting haikyu sports action. Creator Haruichi Furudate offers more challenges for his star team, Karasuno, as they move through the brackets of the big spring tournament.
Haikyu!! Volume 13 is one of the better competition volumes. I can say that the two matches depicted here are quite engaging, and one of the matches results in a heckuva cliffhanger. Haikyu!! seems to be on a quest to be one of the best sports manga, and it is getting closer to that goal.
I READS YOU RECOMMENDS: Fans of sports manga will want the Shonen Jump title,
Haikyu!!
