Hal Jordan's old foe, the Shark returns in this exceptionally bloody issue of Green Lantern. There is a battle between GL and the Shark which is fairly interesting but the lengthy internal monologue of Jordan during the battle tends to diffuse the excitement somewheat. There is also a subplot of strange creatures that are mutating people including the old villain Black Hand who proceeds to murder a whole truckload of people. Van Sciver's art is well suited for this story since he does a good job with monsters and people with faces distorted by pain and death. The DC creators said that the new Green Lantern series would emphasize the heroism of the character but so far, what we are seeing mainly is the danger and violence associated with super-adventures. This is a dark title, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but it is odd that Green Lantern has yet to shine his light over these dark things.
