DearS Official Fan Book

DearS was a comedy manga series originally published in the shounen manga magazine, Dengeki Comic Gao!  TOKYOPOP collected the English language version in eight volumes.  Created by the manga ka duo, PEACH-PIT (Banri Sendo and Shibuko Ebara), DearS followed the misadventures of a boy named Takeya Ikuhara and a strange young woman he finds, Ren, a member of an alien race whose ship made an emergency landing on Earth.  The DearS were genetically engineered to be slaves, so a DearS will genetically imprint itself onto one person who becomes its “Master,” which is the situation between Takeya and Ren.

 

DearS Official Fan Book is an anthology of stories featuring the most popular characters from DearS.  A number of manga-ka contribute to this volume, including Takagi Nobuyuki (of Pure Marionation fame).  Some of the contributors did make their entries reflect the fan service (T&A) for which DearS is known, especially the manga-ka who offer pinups, Ramiya Ryo, Kaishaku, and the aforementioned Nobuyuki.  The other entries are gag strips or sketch comedy featuring favorite cast members such as Takeya, Ren, Miu, Khi, Xaki, and more.

 

DearS fans should love at least some of the offerings, including my favorite – the melon bread deficiency short story.
