GraphicNovelReporter.com  has compiled its list of The Best Graphic Novels and Manga of 2010, a diverse assortment of 30 titles that contributed to the advancement of graphic storytelling this past year.

In addition to some of the most discussed and best reviewed graphic novels of the past 12 months, such as Charles Burns' X'ed Out, Darwyn Cooke's The Outfit, and Moto Hagio's A Drunken Dream and Other Stories, the list also includes less fanfared, but equally powerful works including Tracy White's How I Made It to Eighteen, Audrey Niffenegger's The Night Bookmobile, and Jim Trombetta's The Horror! The Horror!

“This was a wild, inventive year for graphic novels and manga,” said GraphicNovelReporter's Editorial Director John Hogan, who created the list. “So many writers and artists took interesting risks and created works that are going to stand the test of time. I was particularly impressed by how exciting the young-adult category was. Books like Hereville, Ghostopolis, Foiled, and Salem Brownstone stand shoulder to shoulder with the best adult titles.”

The best-of list also includes selections from multiple GNR reviewers, who have chosen their Favorites of 2010 as well. Casual and devoted graphic novel fans alike will find a very wide assortment of genres represented throughout these lists, along with brief descriptions of all the works picked.

These lists are in addition to GraphicNovelReporter.com's Core Lists, a comprehensive compilation of graphic novels and manga designed to help booksellers and librarians --- as well as casual readers --- ascertain what key books are available.

Featuring six lists in total --- Graphic Novels for Adults, Manga for Adults, Graphic Novels for Teens, Manga for Teens, Graphic Novels for Kids, Manga for Kids --- the Core List is divided into age-appropriate lists for adults, teens and kids. From there, the lists are broken down even further with The Core Ten, The Next 25, and a larger list of 100 titles. In addition, there is a list of Reference Books highlighting guides that will help readers learn more about comics and graphic novels as a medium.

“Since launching Graphic Novel Reporter in 2008, we have had many inquiries from booksellers, librarians and educators who are trying to develop and expand their graphic novel and manga collections, ” says Carol Fitzgerald, president of TheBookReportNetwork.com. “Over and over we were asked what were the essential titles to read, shelve and stock. We developed The Core Lists that include more than 800 graphic novel and manga titles to help anyone interested in starting a graphic collection get a sense of the essential books needed to do so.”

GraphicNovelReporter.com plans to update The Core Lists every six months, with the next update coming in March 2011.
