These Are Not Your Mom's Chick Movies

Here are suggestions of films that might be of interest to women. We tried to steer away from classic chick movies and instead spotlight material which would entertain female and male visitors.

Water
Women in parts of the world have limited or no rights. Their lives are dictated by the will of men. This film which was a struggle to produce because of fundamentalist fanatics finally saw the light of day and shows the fate of widows in India.

Dreamgirls
So a bad musical earns enough nominations to win one of its actresses an Oscar? As much as I like to listen to Motown and watch nice babes dancing, there’s something about this movie that’s odd.

Ok. So it’s adults acting as children in suburbia. There’s enough crazy material to compete with a whole season of Desperate Housewives in this film.

The Queen
There’s a queen in Canada, and she’s the same one as the British’s. While I don’t have anything personal against the lady, I loath the royalty and keep asking myself why we have such ridiculous institutions. Well, here’s a film that tries to convince people like me that having a queen is good for you. Just like your two glasses of milk and apple a day.

Families are crazy. Although seven-year-old Olive Hoover’s family is composed of two adults who seem to love each other, it’s as dysfunctional as they come. On their way to a pageant competition for girls from New Mexico to California, the family will have to survive itself!

It seems that there is a whole genre of films about guys acting like girls and girls acting like guys. She’s the Man is the most extreme and possibly most funny of all.

Hey, this feature would not be complete, without a teenager film aimed at girls! So here is. It’s one of these films where there’s the evil girl and the good girl and all their friends and you just know the ugly duckling will come out on top at the end and date the nice guy!

I’m tempted to say that putting two women in one office will always lead to office politics. Ok. I said it and I stand by my word! Having said this, The Devil Wears Prada shows that some women who love to indulge in office politics are just mean while others who get dragged in these crazy affairs are really good people.

This Swedish film explored the image of the action woman more than any other one in recent history. Although the hero was male, the main heroine was not a damsel in distress. She actually saved our hero’s life too many times. How can such a strange dynamic exist?

Serenity
Director Josh Whedon, has a thing for strong female characters. As the creator of Buffy, The Vampire Hunter, he spearheaded a whole tradition of strong action heroine. Serenity is no different and is the best at what she does. Whedon knows how to give his characters just enough spirit so they don’t come off as typical action pastiches.

Ok, so we included an action movie in this list! But who doesn’t like girl power? Mrs Smith, the secret agent married to Mr Smith, another secret agent working for a competing agency, shows that she can kick her husband’s ass as well as he can her’s! It’s the War of the Roses again, but with spies instead.

This movie is as much about the growing up in the 1970s as it is about strong Quebec-born women who were the backbone of their societies for centuries.
