AVENGERS/JLA # 4

The miniseries ends with a bang. Several bangs in fact, as the League and the Avengers go after Krona, only to discover that Krona has recruited an army of supervillains to stop them. With time crossing back and forth, virtually every character who was a member of both teams gets at least a cameo, even such comedy relief figures as the Great Lakes Avengers and Justice League Antartica. The action is fast and furious-- maybe a little too fast and furious. In all the fighting, there is very little emotional connection established with the characters. The heroism of all the Leaguers and Avengers-- going into combat with little knowledge of their opponents or the threat they are facing-- doesn't come across. And even the deaths of several major characters is pretty much just another plot device.

This is mainly the story that fanboys have been waiting two decades to see and we do get to see key heroes from one company beat up the villains from another. Busiek even throws a bone to all the fanboys who have been crying over Thor's defeat by giving the Marvel heroes the best scenes. Perez's art is wonderful as usual. Anyone else would have probably had a coronary doing something this complex and breath-taking.
