It’s one year later and Aquaman is back from his departure. Well, we are not exactly sure if he ever did disappear, but at least, there is a new guy in town, curiously named Arthur Curry, like the old Aquaman. He’s blond, can breath underwater, but is not a real warrior nor an Atlantean. A curious dweller with a beard made of tentacles wants him to dress as the former sea king and go on an adventurous quest.

Busiek pitched this new direction for Aquaman. He says that if he had not the series would have been cancelled. Frankly, I’m tired of all the different directions Aquaman has had over the years. They tried everything with him, including CSI Miami. Judging this issue on its own, it does show some promises and a clean break from all the heavy Aquaman continuity, while wallowing on who Aquaman really is. This is a new character. But still, if DC Comics wanted a clean break from the old Aquaman and his convoluted history, could they remove some of the wacky stuff like the coincidental identities of both the old and the new Aquaman?

The artwork is impressive. This is a sword and sorcery series rendered by one of the best artist of the genre. However, what most will remember is the colouring by Dan Brown. DC Comics seems to have invested in better colouring to help sales of this series. Everything is moody and dark, as things should be at the bottom of the oceans. The New Aquaman looks a lot like Michael Jackson, but I digress  . . .
