Wonderland #2 Advance Review
By Andy Frisk
September 1, 2012 - 01:00
Agreeing to let Violet attempt to live a more normal life, Calie lets her start attending school in the small town that they've settled in. Things seem to be going well, but when Violet neglects to check in with her mom, and comes home late, the stage is set for a classic mom vs teenager argument. Meanwhile, the Mad Hatter's madness continues to grow and infect more and more of the town's residents leading to Calie's worst nightmare possibly coming true...while at the same time the Queen of Spades continues to build her army in Wonderland.
More of the type of solid storytelling, art, and character development that drove
Wonderland #1 drives
Wonderland #2. Zenescope Entertainment's hot new series, which chronicles the further adventures of Alice Liddle's daughter and grand-daughter as they attempt to leave the madness of Wonderland behind them, ups the ante with issue #2's developments. Mixing the realistic human drama between Calie and her daughter Violet with the kind of slasher film horror that rises above the regular juvenility that characterizes such stories, series writer Raven Gregory continues to deliver the thrills, chills, and well plotted and executed story.
Artist Sheldon Goh takes on the pencilling chores this issue and doesn't miss a beat. His eye for detail and panel layout are excellent. He manages to create the type of horrific scenes (such as the aftermath of a killing spree) without resorting to a load of graphic detail. He instead chooses to leave a vast majority of it the imagination while revealing just enough to reveal the horror of the Mad Hatter inspired killer (killers?) actions.
A strong second outing by Gregory and team on
Wonderland #2 keeps the hope alive that this series will be one that delivers smart horror and smart storytelling for the long run.
