Conan and Yanna’s captivity seems at an end, as they find themselves penniless in a distant city. Though the worst of their troubles seem behind them, they are still toys of two witches, whose grudge against the warriors is way too personal.

Meanwhile, the flashbacks to Conan’s youth continue, telling a tale of his first love that ended in tragedy (don’t they all?) It’s appropriate enough, as this is far more a Conan story than a Wonder Woman story. She’s simply guest-starring. An unlikely pairing, but Gail Simone makes it work.

Lopresti and Ryan’s artwork is perfect for the material. I don’t often find and artist or art team so suited for a property as this. It has that old style Marvel-era Conan look that was perfect by Kane, Buscema and Chan, yet retains a fresh polish that surpasses an homage or an imitation.

Two more issues are left in this series, which seems a shame. It is my hope that DC and Dark Horse will revisit the idea from time to time. But not too often. DC has returned to the well that is Watchmen and Dark Knight Returns so often, they’ve run dry. I’d hate to see that happen here.

Rating: 9/10
