Review: Wonder Woman Conan #1

On the one hand, Wonder Woman and Conan seems an unlikely pairing – like Batman and Darth Vader, or Captain Kirk and Mike Hammer. The series could easily go off the rails, but that’s no fault of the talent behind it. I would be more inclined to attribute that to the challenge of pairing these two characters together.

But they are both warriors of a timeless nature, and have been cast into the arena together. But is it truthfully Wonder Woman, or merely a star-spangled Amazon warrior? Well, liberties are taken to bring the two together. Anyone curious enough to pursue the team-up must first set believability aside.

It’s a classic Conan story, as the self-serving barbarian runs afoul of an execution when the promise of gold is laid before him. But like all promises made in the face of certain death, there is more wind than wealth behind it.

There’s no shortage of action or battle, and both characters seem to true to themselves as I remember them. Gail Simone has been writing Red Sonja, so Conan is hardly a great leap. The artwork is appropriately dynamic, especially the fight scenes, and seems designed to engage the reader from the get-go – something I expect from a pro like Simone.
