Grail is trying to feed her father Darkseid who is caught in a baby’s form so that he can grow back into being a New God again. But New Gods feed on old gods and it’s up to Grail to kill all of Zeus’s children so that Darkseid may feed on their life forces and gain adulthood again. Will Wonder Woman’s brother, also a child of Darkseid be next?

I like the premise of this story even though I was less enthused with the idea that Wonder Woman would have a twin brother. It once again removes the whole “clay” aspect of her persona and reiterates the version of her origin that is as the full child of Zeus and Hippolyta. Baby Darkseid reminds me of Damian. I love to hate him. James Robinson’s tale is good and an apt topic for Wonder Woman. He handled the Wonder Woman’s never revealed brother thing well enough. Stories where a major family member or person from a hero’s past is revealed can lead to a lot of incredulity but the framing device of using the multiple children of Zeus work to Robinson’s advantage.

Emanuela Lupacchino’s art is in line with the work of previous Wonder Woman illustrators since Rebirth. She can draw a coastal Greek village as well as high-tech helicopters chasing Grail and Darkseid on Northern mountain tops. Her figures are as solid as her backgrounds. With great colouring by Romulo Fajardo Jr., the art is enhanced to new heights.

Rating: 8 /10
