Turok Dinosaur Hunter #1
By Hervé St-Louis
March 23, 2014 - 15:37
In Turok Dinosaur Hunter, a young Turok witnesses the death of his parents, yet grows up with a tribe that requires him to pay back a debt owned by the deceased father and mother. Turok lives on the margins of the tribe, staying mostly in the forest and interacting with animals. One day when he was being bullied by Andar, the nephew of the tribe’s leader, dinosaurs brought by white men from Europe attack all residents from the village. Turok escapes with Andar, but will the dinosaurs find them?
Just like in Magnus Robot Figther #1, Turok plays with in a universe with an alternate history. Here dinosaurs still exists and are used by the colonisers from Northern Europe looking for gold in the “new world.” Not knowing what to expect from this series, I’ll say that I like this premise a lot. It also feels like the kind of story that exemplifies the post-humanists concerns of our current Western societies. I like that in this story, so far, the bad guys are the European invaders attacking American natives with dinosaurs. It captures the brutality that really happened to natives 500 years ago when they first met Europeans.
The strongest part of artist Mirko Colak’s work is the background he immerses his characters in. They are dark and well contrasted with the lightly shaded characters that populate the story. As a device, Colak also blackens the faces of antagonists, removing their humanity and any way for the reader to empathize with them. The figures are clean with good proportions. The most sinister thing about this comic is the “crack” sound used repeatedly. This work is engaging.
