Tiny Titans #1 Return to the Threehouse

Brainiac 5 and Psimon have stolen the Titans’ treehouse. Superboy, Supergirl want it back. Meanwhile inside the stolen treehouse, Terra, Beastboy and Raven prepare their getaway. No one gets hurt this issue, except Beast Boy who is still in love with Terra.

This comic book is cute. It’s made for kids. As much as it was fun and definitely kid-friendly, I’m not sure if it’s effective. It’s so cute and clever in how it integrates the Teen Titans’ history that I wonder who DC Comics aims this at? Some of the references like Beast Boy’s perennial infatuation with Terra are from old comics with a darker context. Baltazar added a Hey Arnold vibe to Terra making her love and hate Beast Boy. The comic book is fun and entertaining. But why would a kid read this? This comic book is for parents who remember the Titans. There are too many inside jokes and obscure characters. For example, the first Aqualad is on the cover. What kid in 2014 remembers the first Aqualad? They would only know the modern one in Young Justice and perhaps remember another kid who kind of looked like him. Tiny Titans is not exactly for ten to twelve years-old kids either.

I enjoy Baltazar’s cartoons. He simplifies his characters just enough to make them recognizable. Each character has its own icons and bright colours. Since the publisher aimed this comic book at older readers like me in an attempt to give them to kids, I guess DC Comics has succeeded.
