By Hervé St-Louis

What is the origin of the Grey Witch? Griselda, we learn in this issue was once a Baltic girl whose people sacrificed to dark forces. Griselda survived her ordeal and joined the Great Wyrms that scare humans. She learned magic and became the Grey Witch. What are the other secrets of the Grey Witch and how are they tied to the secret sixth weapons she fears so much?
Everything about this series surprised me. It’s the first issue that I read. It felt like I was reading The Unwritten. This issue was a good jumping point although I don’t know much about the other protagonists. I liked how the Grey Witch’s story has Viking elements. Yet these are almost irrelevant in the Western environment she exits in. The story was not scary but it is similar in tone to Vertigo series.
Tyler Crook’s artwork is efficient. It’s clean enough and simple. Yet, it conveys all the right emotions in a few strokes. The details and background may be minimal but they support the characters in the foreground well. The inks are also clean. The colours are doll but that’s on purpose. The story told is not bright and joyful. So the tones support the mood of the story well. I’m curious about this series now and will seek more.
