Tottington and Emerald finally mange to land in merry ole England, but have to hike to the nearest bus station since they had to land miles from their destination due to the monsters running loose in the city and its airports. During their hike they come across a group of centaurs who just happen to be huge Emerald fans, to Tottington’s despair…Meanwhile, Gene Everyman and Laverne run into Dizzy Claiborne and his manager in New York, and discover that they’re on the same flight to London, and on the same mission…

Firetower Studios’ The Order of Dagonet #3 continues the adventures, or rather misadventures, of the Knights of Dagonet and their quest to save England from Oberon and Titania’s Fairie take over of the realm. While none of them, beyond Tottington and Emerald, have yet to actually run into a mythical creature, as they inch closer to London it’s obvious that a comedic battle awaits. Comedy and parody, spiced with some insightful commentary on art and creativity, fill this issue. The dialogue, especially between Everyman and Lavern, is quite good. The focus on the cultural differences between Laverne (a black woman from the American South) and Everyman (a white man from England) is really well developed. The two are becoming friends and learning a great deal about one another and their outlooks on life. As they get to know one another more and more, they find that they have more in common by way of understanding each other than either thought. It’s a well written and developed relationship that really carries the story in this issue.

Series artist Jason Strutz continues to produce some of the most interesting and unique sequential art around, but unfortunately we don’t get to see much more of his interesting and well developed Fairie beings, especially their king and queen. We are treated to some well drawn and conceived centaurs and silly looking and acting monsters. Oberon, Titania, and crew should be showing up again soon though. Strutz’s characters are all well drawn, but he really excels when bringing the fantastic characters to life on the page.

Whitley and Strutz have managed to do something that many small indie presses fail to do: produce a third issue of a series that coherently and pleasantly continues a well plotted and interesting storyline. The odds are usually against the small publishers, but Firetower Studios looks to take these odds on…and win. They are thus far.

Rating: 8.5 /10
