The Marine 2 is a sequel of the 2005 film featuring John Cena as a sniper marine soldier saving the day. Here Ted DiBiase Jr, the son of wrestler Ted DiBiase takes over Cena’s role as Joe Linwood, the tough US marine who must stop terrorists on an island that have captured the highly valuable guests at a new resort. While his wife is captive, Joe must do all he can to infiltrate the hotel and save every captive while doing maximum damage. Will he succeed in his mission?

It seems that the WWE is trying to built a stable of diverse properties using upcoming and popular wrestling stars. While John Cena and The Rock are given, Ted DiBiase Jr is really a newcomer, having been in the federation for just over a year. His charisma is not the same as his father, but for an action flick, he does have the looks to pull off such a role. This is not a grandiose film here. It’s meant to entertain for one lazy evening as it is also a direct to video release. But don’t let the direct to video release thing bother you. This film is entertaining, although the plot was a classic of the action film. The director was very careful to integrate as much of the local Thai locale in the film and as the cliché goes, the set becomes a character.

As for the cinematography, of course it was good. The locale of the film is has texture and filled with vibrant colours. I liked the long action shots that the director took, running after Ted DiBiase Jr as he perfomed his fight in a tight choreography. The DVD features a lot of behind the scenes and interviews with the cast. It also shows how the fight scenes were choreographed and discuss the locales used to shoot the film. I say it’s a must see to understand why the movie was set there and maybe plan a vacation there next year.

Rating: 7 /10
