Pepper Potts asks Tony Stark, the Iron Man for a suit of her own similar to the Rescue suit Stark made for her earlier. But Stark will not accept for fear of putting her in harm’s way. Meanwhile the Hammers have succeeded in selling the Detroit Steel mecha armour to Japan creating an automatic arms race with the United States and a need for Hammer’s technology. Can Iron Man stop that?

This is a quiet issue that I think will prepare for some explosive material next issue. I don’t like how Rhodey feels negative about the upcoming fight as if he would not return from it. I like how Fraction is trying to rebuild Iron Man supporting cast after having lost several major characters to other Avengers series. This storyline feels like a strong foundation for the future of Stark, but better attuned to current technology and dialogue. This story could definitely be set in Silicon Valley and Stark could be said to head a small company like Palm. It’s interesting that the old Iron Man was caught in the Cold War technological era while this one is more caught in the Silicon Valley and dot com era. One worry though, is that Fraction may set his story too close to the world of Silicon Valley and Web 2.0 instead of figuring out some of the futurist stuff that Iron Man was known for. All the technology, like the repulsor tech is explained in a paradigm that makes it seem normal to current readers but do not push the exploration of any future technology. Do we want to read an Iron Man whose technology, although non existent can be explained or do we want to dream about an Iron Man that is beyond our reaches?

I like the interior scenes with Stark and Potts. Each really have a look of their own. It’s the same for the other characters like Rhodey who’s starting to resemble Don Cheadle who played his role in Iron man. I’m not a fan of the Detroit Steel armour as it is too big and lack and any humanoid silhouette. But perhaps the thing about that armour is too show that it’s overkill compared to the lean simplicity of the Iron Man suit.

Rating: 9 /10
