The Fall and Rise of Captain Atom #1

Captain Atom is in danger of exploding and losing his physical coherence and integrity. Not even the Justice League can help him. And then the inevitable happens. He explodes. Is he dead or alive?

The creators of the modern version of Captain Atom are writing his again. We should rejoice Cary Bates and Greg Weisman wrote the stories of the Post Crisis Captain Atom that DC Comics had acquired earlier from Charlton Comics. But this time, they are writing Captain Atom without any age limit or Comic Code. But is it good?

Yeah, it is. Captain Atom is lively and less brooding than he was Post Crisis. He really is a good man trying his best to help humanity and feeling guilty about hurting people inadvertently with his powers. Instead of being the cold military man, he is a man we can relate to with enormous powers. This story sold me his potential and appeal. I can’t wait to read more.

I don’t know Will Conrad but I like his clean classic DC Comics look! He has a great handle on anatomy and his Justice League characters look good. Of note are his special effects and water illustrations. They are great. You’ll notice that DC Comics seem to model Captain Atom closely after The Watchmen’s Dr. Manhattan. He is clearly blue instead of silver. Interesting decision!
