The idea of a gaming universe akin to comic book universes is not new but video game publisher 2K is building its original gaming universe from the ground up, literally. Following its successful release of several XCOM games, 2K, maker of BioShock is set to release The Bureau: XCOM Declassified on August 20, 2013.

The Bureau Declassified looks at the early alien invasion of the world in the 1960s. According to Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K, “We will continue to expand the XCOM universe by telling original stories set in the paranoia-drenched Cold War era of The Bureau.” 2K Marin’s development director Morgan Gray adds “The alternate 1962 universe that we’ve created for The Bureau is vast and there are many more stories to tell about the early days of XCOM.”

2K is offering players who pre-order The Bureau an extra module called “Codebreakers.” The name is probably inspired by the popular 1960s book on British and American signal interception during World War Two features Agent Carter, trying to reach a secret government agency which is attempting to decode signals from the alien invaders. Pre-order players specifically ordering at GameStop will also receive a Light Plasma Pistol as an exclusive in-game item.
