Box Office Mojo
reports that
Marvel's The Avengers made US movie history this weekend by easily dethroning
Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2 as champion of opening weekend box office grosses.
Marvel's The Avengers which stars Robert Downey, Jr as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/The Hulk, Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanov/The Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye, Tom Hiddleson as Loki,
Clark Gregg as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson,
Cobie Smulders as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Maria Hill, Stellan Skarsgård as
Dr. Selvig, and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury is the film that millions of fans of the 49 year old Marvel Comics franchise have been waiting to see get the big time, blockbuster Hollywood treatment.
Those fans, and generations of new ones, came out in droves to watch some of the most influential and historically relevant superheroes do battle against the forces of evil, personified in Tom Hiddleson's Loki (who easily delivers one of the film's best performances). Now the reigning US box office opening weekend champion, the only only
questions surrounding
Marvel's The Avengers are will it dethrone
Titanic and
Avatar as the highest grossing film of all time and how long will we have to wait for the sequel!?
