Supergirl # 20

An AMAZONS ATTACK crossover. After bringing down Air Force 1, a guilt-ridden Supergirl tries to make up for her mistake by battling a group of invading Amazons, only to find that they are more resourceful than they appear. This story actually captures the confusion and brutality of the Amazon Attack better than the miniseries does. Innocent people are killed and Supergirl actually bleeds as she comes up against some serious opposition. The subplot about an angry husband blaming Supergirl for his wife's disappearance is a bit contrived, especially the unlikely coincidences-- (he just happens to be a combat veteran?) -- but it does help to put Supergirl in contact with a wider variety of people who react to her in different ways. The art is a bit of a mix. The photo-realism makes it very clear and believable but at times, it appears a bit stiff. Some panels are clearly laid out around Supergirl striking a heroic pose-- even to the point of crowding out the other elements in those panels. Still, it is refreshing to see Supergirl depicted realistically-- not as an underage sexpot. Four out of five stars.
